Introduction
George the Masai bull giraffe became a legendary figure for his extraordinary height. This article revisits his arrival, growth, and legacy, while also offering some context about giraffe height in general.
George’s Arrival and Early Height
George came to Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom from Kenya on January 8, 1959, when he was 18 months old. At that time, he stood about 19 feet (5.8 meters) tall, already impressively large for a juvenile. His journey from the savannas of Kenya to a European zoo marked the beginning of a record-breaking life.
Peak Height and Notable Quirks
By age nine, George reached an astounding 20 feet (6.1 meters). His height was so extreme that his horns occasionally poked through the doors of the giraffe house, requiring him to duck under door frames. Beyond his size, George was noted for a cheeky personality, often using his height to playfully lift hats off visitors’ heads as they walked through.
Guinness World Records and Legacy
George was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the tallest giraffe in the world. He passed away on July 22, 1969, leaving a lasting imprint on the public imagination and on the history of zoos and tall animals.
Why Was George So Tall?
The exact reason for George’s exceptional height remains unclear. At arrival, he was within the expected range for a Masai bull, but continued growing past the usual adult height. Some factors likely contributed: being male (males tend to be taller than females) and the natural variation in growth among individuals. He ultimately added height beyond what is typical for his species.
How Tall Are Giraffes in General?
Giraffes are among the tallest land animals. Most giraffes reach heights around 18 feet (5.5 meters), with Masai giraffes commonly around 19 feet (6.1 meters). Some species, and individual males, can exceed these averages. Neck length is a key contributor, with giraffes typically having necks around 5 feet (1.5 meters) long, yet all giraffes share the same seven cervical vertebrae as humans.
Male-Female Height Differences
Generally, male giraffes are taller than females, often by several inches to a foot or so, depending on species. Males’ extra height is partly linked to battles for mates, where necking and sparring establish dominance.
Bottom Line
George’s 20-foot height at nine years old cements his place among the tallest giraffes ever recorded. While his stature could feel intimidating, giraffes are widely regarded as gentle giants, a paradox that makes their towering presence even more remarkable.
